Splash: something happened by the pool

Night has fallen. The pool is illuminated, everything seems perfectly calm, and yet... splash. Something has clearly just disturbed this lovely evening.

With Splash, the artist Misteratomic plunges us into a scene reminiscent of a 1950s or 60s American film. Modernist architecture, a pool, retro colors, and that little touch of mystery that intentionally lets your imagination run wild: the image tells a story without ever truly telling us what just happened.

Produced as a 1000-piece puzzle by Piece & Love, Splash has a difficulty rating of 7/10. It is made in France from 100% recycled FSC-certified cardboard, plastic-free, like the other puzzles made in France that we select at Kiplé.

Puzzle 1000 pièces Splash par Piece and Love

Like a still from a film

That’s probably what makes Splash so successful: Misteratomic shows us neither the beginning nor the end of the story. Just a moment frozen in time.

Who’s just fallen into the water? Was it on purpose? Why does this swimming pool suddenly seem so empty? Piece & Love offers just one clue in the form of a warning to a certain Michel not to run by the poolside… and leaves us to imagine the rest.

This design works particularly well as a jigsaw puzzle: as you piece together the 1,000 pieces, you’re reconstructing not just a simple landscape but a full-fledged scene. And with a difficulty rating of 7/10, the large areas of colour and the night-time atmosphere should require enough careful observation to keep you on your toes right up to the very last pieces.

A touch of Palm Springs

Behind Splash lies Misteratomic, a graphic designer whose creative world draws primarily on the aesthetics of the 1950s and 1960s. The architecture, design and graphic art of that period inspire his creations, in which he blends retro nostalgia with a contemporary perspective.

With its swimming pool and modernist architecture, Splash inevitably evokes that idealised image of California, where one imagines the houses of Palm Springs, long summer evenings and vintage cars parked outside motels with neon signs.

An American retro aesthetic that reappears in a different form in Drive, illustrated by Marie Chevalier: this time, a vintage car in front of an American diner sign… but still without Ryan Gosling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Misteratomic, the artist behind the Splash jigsaw puzzle?
Misteratomic is a graphic designer whose work draws its inspiration primarily from the world and aesthetics of the 1950s and 1960s. He draws on the graphic, architectural and visual styles of that period to reinterpret them in contemporary compositions imbued with nostalgia.

Piece & Love explains that its aesthetic is particularly inspired by an era when design, graphic art and architecture embodied freedom, innovation and a zest for life. ‘Splash’ is a prime example of this: a swimming pool, modernist architecture and a cinematic atmosphere combine to create an image that seems straight out of another era.
What story does the Splash illustration tell?
In fact, it doesn’t really give us the answer — and that’s part of its charm. The scene seems perfectly calm: it’s night-time, the swimming pool is lit up and the architecture around it appears almost frozen in time. Yet the famous ‘splash’ suggests that something is about to happen, or has just happened, off-screen.

Piece & Love adds just one clue with its tagline: ‘Michel, haven’t we told you not to run by the pool!’ As for the rest, it’s up to each person to imagine the scene. This incomplete narrative gives the jigsaw puzzle an almost cinematic quality: we piece together an image that seems to be a freeze-frame from a wider story.
Is the Splash jigsaw puzzle difficult to put together?
Piece & Love rates Splash as a 7/10 in terms of difficulty. With its 1,000 pieces, it therefore offers a real challenge whilst remaining more accessible than the brand’s most difficult models.
The illustration features architectural elements and contrasts that provide visual cues, but the night-time setting and certain areas of more uniform colour may require closer attention. A poster showing the entire design is included in the box and can be used as a guide whilst assembling the model.
Why might Splash appeal to fans of vintage design and décor?
Because the appeal of this model lies not solely in the jigsaw itself. Misteratomic builds his illustrations around a genuine retro aesthetic inspired by the 1950s and 1960s, particularly their architecture and design.
Once the 1,000 pieces have been assembled, Splash forms a 68 × 49 cm picture that is perfectly suitable for display and framing. For anyone who loves modernism, retro American styles or the Palm Springs aesthetic, the result can serve as a genuine decorative piece — a far cry from the traditional jigsaw puzzle that is invariably taken apart once completed.
